London is made up of a series of ‘villages’ each with its own different character and feel. Maida Vale is an affluent residential district just west of the centre and is a pretty, quiet and safe neighbourhood. The area is mostly residential, with many large late Victorian and Edwardian blocks of mansion flats and is within the City of Westminster. Maida Vale gets its name from a battle in 1806 where Sir John Stuart's men defeated Napoleon Bonaparte’s army at the town of Maida in Italy. There are three main areas, one around the tube in Elgin Avenue, that has two restaurants, Starbucks and Gail's coffee shops, a pub, two chemists, a hairdresser, two banks and shops selling a range of ethnic foods, vegetables and fruits. The second area is a short walk away in Clifton Road, where you will find three excellent cafés, a Tesco supermarket, chemist, beautician and two upmarket delicatessens. The third is known as Little Venice a very picturesque section of connecting waterways and canals with pretty houseboats. The Canal Café Theatre and restaurant is close to the bridge and in season there are many public hire narrow boats to travel up and down the canals. There is also another Tesco supermarket in Hall Road and across the road a charming small independent Everyman cinema. There is a large park, the Paddington Recreation Ground, that has a gym. You don’t have to go far to find interesting places to visit in London, particularly if you have been here before and want to explore lesser known London. All the places of interest listed below are walking distance away: • Abbey Road Studios: These are recording studios made famous by the Beatles • Lord’s Cricket Ground: one of two major cricket venues in London and home of the MCC. • Regent’s Park: Stunning royal park with boating on the lake in the summer • BBC recording studios: check out the BBC website for their programme of events • Portobello Road: Great and diverse market (see shopping below) • Regents and Grand Union Canals: Stunning walks along the canals in good weather

My favourite restaurants: 1. Sushi Murasaki which is a 10 minute walk away serves high quality sushi, with non-traditional starters like tuna carpaccio which is my go-to every time. 2. The Elgin near the station is a great gastropub for a drink and food (burgers are really good) and also serves a creative brunch with proper coffee. 3. Morso near Abbey Road serves delicious Italian tapas 4. Le Cochonnet serves more traditional Italian food like proper pizzas 5. Walking 20 minutes towards Paddington station (walk by the canals via Rembrandt Gardens), you’ll also find Sheldon Square which has authentic dimsum at Pearl Liang and Aussie brunch Beany Green. Favourite things to do: 1. Walking down Little Venice and visiting Clifton Nurseries, which is a garden centre that feels like an oasis of calm in central London. 2. The Everyman cinema has comfy sofa seats, cocktails and delicious food (get a sundae!) whilst you enjoy a movie. 3. St John’s Wood is not far away, perfect for some shopping and also stopping by Maida Vale Recording Studios on Abbey Road if you are a Beatles fan. 4. Notting Hill is a 30 minute walk or quick bus ride away. On Saturdays, it is the biggest day for Portobello market where you can find stalls, vintage shops, and the famous blue door from the movie. Groceries: Elgin market at the end of the road by the station will have most things you need. You could also go to Tesco by the petrol station on Lanark road, which is about a 10 minute walk.
