The half-hour or so hike up to Athen's highest point is rewarded with a stunning view of the entire city all the way down to the sea. You can start from the apartment by turning right and walking all the way up Komninon – with the rest being self-explanatory. And once you've reached the peak, you can also enjoy a drink or a meal in the large restaurant. If you're too tired to walk down, take the cable car.

Every now and then I crave a croissant with my coffee, but most cafés (that aren't chains) don't have them - except Paraskinio, which also serves a great traditional apple pie. Opens at 11 am.

The neighbourhood's go-to street to eat, drink and be merry on. In terms of restaurants, I particularly like Rakoumél (Emmanouil Benaki no. 71), which serves Cretan specialities, and Ouzeri Lesvos (no. 38). The more upmarket Rififi (no. 69) is also great, and should you tire of Greek food, try Mystic Pizza & Pasta (no. 76) for a plate of wholesome Italian fare made of organic, local produce.

Getting Around

Uber is banned in Athens, but taxis are quite cheap. Download the BEAT taxi app to order a cab when and where you want it and so that you can pay by credit card via the app instead of by cash in the car.
