You will find a fairly standard menu, with grilled meats and fresh grilled fish, which is hard to beat.

The recipe is simple but as with many things simple there is a lot of work behind it: it serves quality traditional Portuguese cuisine based on seasonal market products, and careful attention to cooking techniques. The restaurant is small and so is storage space so they don't have a large range of dishes or wines: 4-5 starters and 4-5 main courses, and wines chosen carefully to complement the dishes. There is a very knowledgeable sommelier on hand to advise on wine pairings by the glass or bottle, and the staff is friendly and efficient. Main courses are around 13-18€, and starters 4.50-13€.

Half-way down on the left, is a quirky and hip little restaurant, combining Portuguese flavours with touches from around the world. The humus is very good, as is the moqueca (a Brazilian fish stew) and the “bolinhos de alheira com queijo de cabra e sementes de sésamo” (little cakes made of chicken sausage, goat cheese and sesame seeds). For vegetarians the bulgur tabbouleh is a good option.

Works on a 5-course set menu (don’t worry, the portions are small) and provides modernist cuisine de auteur at a price which is not cheap, but is modest in relation to the quality: 35€ per person, plus wine. The atmosphere is very relaxed, but all the focus is on the food, so it is not really a place to take children. Boi-Cavalo is a must-visit for foodies – you might be lucky just showing up, but it is safer to book.

One of the very best of the hand-made ice-cream shops that have cropped up in Lisbon in the past few years.
