When You Give Your House Keys to a Stranger
Renting out your home can earn you some money, but how should you deal with having strangers in your space?

By Diane Stopyra of the New York Times
Aug. 16, 2019

“….Take the 38-page booklet that Bill Burleigh leaves for guests at his 1,400-square-foot Moose Lodge in Big Sur, Calif., named for Mr. Burleigh’s late bloodhound. The “Moose Manual” doesn’t merely offer the Wi-Fi password and explain the inner workings of the dishwasher; it also incorporates the homeowner’s sense of humor, encouraging guests to spend their vacation naked, since the property sits on 10 secluded acres overlooking the Pacific. Tenants are also greeted by a life-size copper rendering of Don Quixote on a horse, a homage to Mr. Burleigh’s nickname when he worked as a judge and advocated for causes he says he never won, as well as a bottle of his homemade wine, which he calls “a fine red varietal” or “fly or ant spray.”

“Bill Burleigh, founder of the Big Sur Marathon, has “explored every trail and road” in the area for the last 45 years. Renting out his secluded home so that others can experience the region, he said, “has been a highlight of my life.”

“Making people smile is sort of my raison d’être,” said Mr. Burleigh, 84, who has had only two negative experiences in 10 years of weekly rentals. In one case, a tenant broke house rules and hosted a large event, a pseudoscientific convention on energy cleansing for 50 of what Mr. Burleigh’s wife, Anne, calls “hocus-pocus people.” In the other, a gentleman trashed the house, leaving furniture outside and broken glass and dog-soiled rugs inside.

“This place is full of smiles and whimsical things,” Mr. Burleigh said. “I’ve always trusted people, and it’s worked out. You just have to trust and assume the best.”You can rent this entire amazing property for less money than a room at Post Ranch or Ventana Resorts!"

The property:

Very private! Amenities such as iPod dock, XM satellite radio, three LED HDDVR's, two speakers in every room. WiFi and internet service. Best for one or two couples - you'll flip a coin to see who gets the upstairs bedroom, with views to Japan and pop-up LED HDDVR TV. Clear glass skylights over every bed, for the stars. Air bed on the deck. Very green: double paned, tinted Pella windows and doors, radiant in-floor heating, seven layers of insulation.

You are welcome to have guests and parties, but we remind you that this is a “Crash Pad”, not a “Party Pad”. We are sensitive about the safety of our fragile art and sculptures.

WE LOVE DOGS AND HORSES, so if you have either and want to bring them, they would love it here. If you don't have a dog you will need to rent one :-) Extra charge for horses. No cats please.

Soporific deep cushion deck furniture: 12 chairs and 2 chaise's, plus a large coffee table, and a tile- topped dining seating six. Large lower deck and another deck in back that seats four and sleeps one. All cushions are 4' deep Sunbrella, web bottoms. Large bottom cushion for slouching and napping. In silence. Or with music.

We have a great sound system, but sometimes it is better to just sit on the deck and listen: the wind in the trees, the zoom of humming birds, the distant gobble of wild turkeys, the occasional screech of a hawk or falcon, the flutter of the wings of a startled owl ...

We meet most of Forbe's Standards for a 5 Star Resort. Sorry, no room service.

If creativity is your thing, if you thrive on originality and the unusual, this is your place. Finished building in April, 2010. We have lots of whimsy mixed in with fine art and sculpture; a kind of a whacky elegance. 'Far from the madding crowd's ignoble strife....' (Thomas Gray)

We call it Moose Lodge as a play on words, for our lovable hound, Moose. But this is definitely not a men's fraternal organization.

Please note that the words 'stunning', 'breathtaking' 'awesome' and 'spectacular' were never used in the narrative above. Those words have been co-opted by the realtors.

'On this majestic set of battlements - watched over by eagles, suspended so far above the ocean that even the barks of sea lions are muted- who wouldn't feel safe? At this height, almost the only sound is the wind in the redwoods and Big Sur looks rugged and unscalable. I have never seen another place in the world like it. Its ridges and promontories inspire mingled feelings of peace and power and health... simply to exist here is to feel purified.' Paul Theroux, Bon Appetit, March, 1994

My wife and I are in our seventies, going on fifties. Bill is a retired judge, and Anne still teaches people how to sing. We live here eight months a year, then rent it during the summer. We enjoy sharing this remarkable place. We have two dogs, two horses, and eight chickens - the latter at Anne's home in Carmel Valley. I guess we just like all living things, including people.

Bill and Anne Burleigh purchased this lodge in 1973

Why Bill and Anne Burleigh chose Big Sur
It seems unlikely that one could fall in love with an inanimate object, but 40 years ago I fell in love with one that is 60 miles long and 20 miles wide: Big Sur, California. Unlike most love affairs, this one has never dimmed or disappointed me. Big Sur is my passion. It might be yours.

(The original home here burned in 2008; rebuilt in 2010)

What makes this lodge unique:
Sensuality. Music. Laughter. Reading. Privacy. Whimsy. Art and sculpture. Freedom to sing loud, dance 'til you drop. Bang the big gongs at the entrance. Get naked. Just plain let loose. Leave the frantic world behind. Drop out. These are unique things in our normal, hectic busy lives. Life here is not normal.

We have something precious here, something you can't find in the finest, most exclusive and expensive resorts: TOTAL PRIVACY. Think about it.

Dining Area with Seating for 8 people

Bathroom Amenities:

Master bath is in two sections, one with sink and toilet, the other sink and shower, which allows the people in the master BR to go to bed with guests in the living room. The tile work is beautiful and the sinks are copper and faucets are completely original, one of a kind for both. Original African shower curtain. Original copper towel bars and bath tissue holder.

The second full bath has a tub and shower as well as an outdoor shower.

The 1/2 bath has indoor and outdoor showers and sink.

Bedroom Amenities:

Master Bedroom - 1 California King
2nd Bedroom - 1 Queen and 1 queen sleep sofa/futon in the loft. Macy's Hotel Line. Surprisingly comfortable sofa bed. Each bedroom has an HDTV, DVR, DVD in two rooms.
