Tudo leva a crer que a “villa” rústica tenha tido um templo a Santa Cruz e daí o nome da localidade. O nome de Santa Cruz de Lumiares já existia no século XII e provém do facto de ter sido dependente do Couto de Lumiares, uma vez que aparece nos limites dele em 1161 e as inquirições de 1258 (D.
