Cá mbeidh tú

Carrigadrohid, County Cork, Éire

This is a peaceful, calm location. Lovely for walks, fishing, painting, cycling. Very restful.

• Local Amenities

o Carrigadrohid
Local shop (very good…all sorts of things you wouldn’t expect are stocked), Post Office, Pub (they do Sky for big football matches and the like and you can walk home – but mind the cars late at night!!), petrol, phone.
o Coachford
Bigger local Centra supermarket with ATM, a few pubs – two do breakfast.
o Macroom
Decent supermarkets. We use Dunnes because there is a car park in front of it – and Aldi next door.

Loads of pubs…good food and sometimes live folk music in the bar at the Castle Hotel, films and other shows at The Briery Gap. The Auld Triangle which is on the N22 the other side of Macroom does very good food, either bar or restaurant. They are great with children too.
Granvilles by the Castle Demesne do lovely food. There are a few pubs with late licenses which have bands and dances/ discos.

There is a childrens playground in Macroom. Driving in from the house turn left after Spar supermarket, drive past the church and follow the road right. The park is on the right. Parking is available there and there is a great view across Macroom and beyond.
Note that children can be taken anywhere including pubs in our experience.
To park in Macroom you need to pay for parking. Please check the requirements, they change regularly.

You can hire cycles in Macroom.
o For Churches, Caum (on the way to Macroom) and Canovee (over the bridge at Carrigadrohid) both have Mass at 10am on Sundays. Macroom is at 9am and 10.30am we think…please check
o Golf courses are located at Macroom and Lee Valley. Macroom Golf course is through the old Castle arch on the Main Square, follow the road to the Club House. Lee Valley Golf Course is located between Macroom and Cork. You can get there by turning right at Coachford and following signs first for Farran then for the Golf Club.
o Angling
For coarse fishing you are spoilt for choice. To fish the reservoir you need a permit. Tackle and permits are available in Macroom but the best place is probably Rivers Edge which is on the road from Cork to the house. It is about 12 miles from the house near the turning onto the N22. Basically drive towards Cork from the house and the House and shop are on your right on the other side of Iniscarra.
o Cork has all the shops and amenities you could wish for. It is also very pretty in places and has a good feel. There are often Festivals on.
o Shopping – Please note that there is a tax on carrier bags in Ireland for environmental reasons. There is a stock of long life and other carrier bags in the cupboard above the oven. Use them but please replace them. Additional bags always welcome.

• Our Favourite places to visit

o The Tourist office in Macroom is situated in the Main Square opposite the castle entrance. They will tell you what is happening while you are there.

o Farran County Park
A good place for a walk away from roads etc. There is an assault course type variety of play equipment..we don’t know what age they are aimed at but too high for 5 year olds and great fun for adults. There are also some deer, ducks and other animals. The country park is about 15 minutes drive from the house, drive to Coachford and turn right in the centre, cross the bridge over the Lee following signs to Farran. Now Ziit operate there!

Ballyhass Water Park - 10 minutes from the house! https://www.ballyhass.ie/coachford/

o Killarney
You can do a small ring round Killarney lakes via Muckross, Ladies View and on to Kenmare in a day, stop for lunch in Kenmare and then amble back. Killarneys lakes and valleys are beautiful. Killarney town itself is quite touristy but has lots of places to eat, drink and shop.

o Kinsale
A lovely old town on the sea with a great reputation for food. Very pretty, home to a number of food and sailing festivals. To reach Kinsale you go towards Cork, onto the South Ring and follow signs. It is a day trip.

o Glengarrif and Garinish Island
Beautiful island of gardens reached by boat. You pass seals on islands on the bay. Very romantic and peaceful. Some restaurants and pubs on the mainland.

o Gougane Barra
Beautiful small county park with lakes and mountains like a compressed Killarney. On the way to Glengarrif and Bantry.

o Inchidoney
The beach!!! You never know, the weather could be fabulous! Lovely sandy beach. Car Park near the hotel. WC only – not even a pub- so bring your own lunch etc!

o Carrigadrohid
There is a castle in Carrigadrohid which is on the bridge towards Canovee. You can walk from the house and go on the way to the pub. The history is published on a nearby sign…there are lovely walks along the river bank next to the Castle aswell. If you follow the river upstream you reach the Carrigadrohid hydroelectric dam…the whole reason that the valley is now flooded and that the waterlevel changes so much.

The castle does not look safe – so be careful!

o Blarney
Castle, lovely grounds and of course the Blarney stone. Blarney also has a good woollen mills.
Dingle – takes a good day for a visit, worthy of an overnight stop over if you have time.

There is a new walking/running route in Coachford along the river. 2.5km long, opposite the National Rowing Centre at Farran. Follow the directions for Farran above, take a left before you cross the bridge over the river.

5km Parkrun 9.30am Saturdays in Macroom starting in the Castle Demesne.

There are places to hire boats along the river.
