Cumbria, England, an Ríocht Aontaithe

Kirkby is a small and peaceful village. It has a train station (over the road), two pubs (the front door of the Ship Inn [open Wednesday to Sunday] – dating back to 1691 – is about 20 metres away), Pam’s Cafe (open Sunday to Tuesday), local shop, Post Office, and medical practice.

This part of Cumbria is somewhat undiscovered and is brilliant if you love walking. There are plenty of walks on the doorstep, or within a short train/car journey. Coniston is just over 12 miles away, giving access to Coniston Old Man, Wetherlam, Swirl How, and the Langdales. A 10-minute train ride will find you at Silecroft where you can walk up Black Combe (or go sea fishing at Silecroft beach), while a 30-minute train ride will take you to Ravenglass, home to Muncaster Castle and the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, providing access to the Scafell Range and one of the quietest walking routes to Scafell Pike.

The nearby market town of Ulverston (Stan Laurel’s birthplace), with its numerous independent shops, cafes and restaurants, and regular festivals is just 5 miles away. While, the beautiful Furness Abbey, which dates back to 1123 and was once the second-wealthiest and most powerful Cistercian monastery in the country, is 8 miles away. Other local highlights include: Piel Island and seal trips (Barrow-in-Furness / seasonal), Laurel & Hardy Museum (Ulverston), The Dock Museum (Barrow-in-Furness), Brantwood (east side of Coniston), steam yacht gondola cruises on Coniston Water (Coniston), and Windermere Lake Cruises (Lakeside).

I have been letting my cottage for more than a year now and have really enjoyed meeting people from all over the world! I was born in the nearby town of Ulverston and I have lived in the area for nearly all my life. I love living in this part of Cumbria as we are lucky to live near the coast and the mountains. I really enjoy walking and I love exploring the more isolated parts of the area. Aside from walking I enjoy spending time with my family, listening to music, driving, travelling and making jewellery.
