Cad a dhéanfaidh tú

Our day will begin with a meet-and-greet; where I will run though the safety aspects of beekeeping. Stings are rare when safety is well considered. Now, it's time to get nerdy. We will discuss what happens within the colony, the social structure and the roles each honeybee has to play within the superorganism of the hive. The importance of the honeybee to our own lives; and to the world at large cannot be underestimated. The more that we know, the more that we can do to affect a change. Apiary tour: this is where we watch the bees at work. We find out what plants they are foraging, and why, on that specific day. By now you should be confident enough to get your bee suits on (provided by me of course) and do some beekeeping. With my help, you will be guided through the basic steps involved in a hive inspection. All of what we have learned during the day will be put into practice for what I promise to be an inspiring journey into the world of the Northern European Honeybee, Apis mellifera Mellifera.
Other things to note
Bees can and do sting from time to time.
I need to know if you have an allergy, and how severe it is.
Guests must arrange their own transportation. The bus from Cork stops close to the house.

My passion for beekeeping began over a decade ago. Avidly in search of more knowledge and experience I have visited beekeepers around Ireland and the world. In recent years, I successfully completed a Masters Thesis on the issues around breeding the honeybee here in Ireland. Since then I have been working on a project called Hive Mind. With Hive Mind, we are working to build awareness for the preservation of the honey bee here in Ireland and spread the love of our nectar-bearing fuzzy friends.

Travelled down to Kinsale for a little trip with my mum just to do this experience to feed our notion of getting bees! It was so worth it. We learned a lot about the bees, the size of the hives and how they work, saw bees being born, working away happily and generally being surprisingly chill. We collected honey (so delicious) and were delighted to be able to buy lots of fresh honey at the end. The tasting session was a total high! Met some cool people and really enjoyed finding the place through the backroads. It was wild. Thank you Mark

I would highly recommend it as a unique experience. Great atmosphere, very pleasant host. Definitely think it should be publicised more. A documentary could be made for television. I’m delighted I took the tour and will pass the word around.

There is so much going on in a hive, you can’t imagine! In just a few hours we were able to see the bees full on their work, we saw the queen, we saw a bee being born, we saw them getting mad, we saw them in harmony, we collected the honey, we tasted lots of different honeys, and we got to meet this lovely soul called Mark! It was just an amazing experience that everyone should try, because it’s so worth it, so wonderful! It is a lot to digest, a lot of information, and a lot of love put in this work! We are falling in love with everything we saw ♥️

Best experience ever..got up close and personal with our indigenous black bees. Totally safe in the overalls suppllied. Mark extremely knowledgeable about his bees and great to answer any questions. Loved the honey tasting at the and meeting his goose and gorgeous dog. Bees are a total gift..give so much.

Such a lovely, unique experience. Mark is very welcoming and it was a pleasure to listen to his extensive experience & knowledge. The time flew by, a relaxed and informal tour finished with some delicious varieties of honey. I bought it as a present and it was very well received. Highly recommended.

Any review really isn't going to do this fantastic experience justice. We spent an incredible afternoon learning so much with Mark, whose love for his bees and his work is clearly evident. The only bees we have in our garden are solitary bees, so watching social bees work together and communicate was a real treat. Mark made everything accessible and his explanations of the social structure of the hive and what was happening in each hive we visited added a wonderful, wider dimension to the whole experience. The time absolutely flew by, and Mark generously gave more of his time than we expected. By far one of the most enjoyable things we've ever done.
