Cad a dhéanfaidh tú

Nelson Mandela spent he last few months of his 27 year incarceration at a remote house on what was then called Victor Vester Prison. It was here that I cooked for him and attended to his needs. I will give you a tour of this house and share stories of my time with Mr Mandela.

I was a warder for the correctional services during the time of apartheid. I looked after Nelson Mandela at Victor Vester Prison, cooking his meals. This is where we developed a close bond. I am currently retired and spending time with my family.

Jack is an awesome person who inspire respect, that’s why he became a friend of Madiba... I’am grateful to have the opportunity to meet him

This experience was totally unique and a real privilege to gain an insight into Mr. Mandela's life. Jack was generous with his time and his memories and we will remember this for a long time to come. Highly recommended in every respect. Owen also drove us very safely and had plenty of stories of his own to add.

I did this last year and it was one of the most powerful experiences I had in Cape Town, or any other tour for that matter. When I booked a return trip with family this year, it was the first tour we booked. This is the place where Nelson Mandela planned the new South Africa and the guide, Jack, was right there for all of it. Many people talk about Mandela like they knew him and profess ideals they think he would have had. Jack tells personal stories about Mandela that you won't hear any where else, because Jack hasn't published his book yet. South Africans aren't even aware this tour exists and think the photos are from a replica house that Mandela had built in his home town. You have exclusive access to a national heritage site and will be guided by the man himself that was there for all of it. It truly gets no better than that. Make sure to read/ listen to Mandela's autobiography before going to give context to the house and some of the stories that Jack tells. Enjoy!

This is a truly special opportunity- to meet Jack, hear his stories, to SIT IN A CHAIR WHERE MANDELA SAT!! Jack provided warmth, insight, and explanations about the end of Mandela’s incarceration and some more personal context for this era and place. Great tour, worth the money and the time.

Jack was the private chef / guard of Mr Mandela during the latter's last ~15 months of imprisonment. Needless to say, this experience is unique and a huge privilege to meet with Jack and hear his personal stories at the prison. Highly, highly recommended.

Such a remarkable visit with Jack and Brian to Mandela's final prison home. Jack was incredibly open with us about his time shared with Nelson Mandela, and about his own life's journey (from driver on Robben Island, to eventual head of services at the Drakenstein facility - where he served for 14mo as Mandela's personal warder). Few others so closely witnessed the months over which Mandela transitioned from prisoner to leader of a nation - and Jack was generous with his time and stories to convey the gravity of that time and place. Thanks to Jack, Brian and the team at the Nelson Mandela Foundation for offering this experience - it's truly special.
